Oscar Bennett: Community Coordinator

For Oscar Bennett, leadership is more than a role—it’s a lifestyle. His four-year journey with Sustaining Way in Nicholtown shows his strong commitment. “Growing alongside Nicholtown and building relationships with local leaders and residents,” he said, “is the best way to create real change.”

As Sustaining Way’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Oscar played a key role in Nicholtown. Living at Annie’s House on Baxter Street, he was often the first person neighbors saw each morning, whether he fed chickens or kept pipes from freezing on cold nights. His door was always open. Neighbors relied on him for everything from cookouts to important community news.

In his role, Oscar became a familiar face in Nicholtown. He was regularly seen at Thursday’s Meals & Masks, a food distribution program by Sustaining Way. His joyful presence created comfort during difficult times. Travella Fowler, a long-time Nicholtown resident, said, “He really cared about the community… He was more than just food distribution; he understood how the community felt. It’s nice to see someone who truly cares.”

Oscar’s friendly nature was refreshing in every situation. He approached his work with humor, creating a warm atmosphere. As a coworker, he was always ready to help, and his positive attitude was contagious. Abbi Burgess from Sustaining Way said, “Working with Oscar is a joy! People like him are rare. He’s one of the most selfless people you’ll meet, and he always brings a smile or a laugh.”

Oscar graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a degree in Political Science. He encourages people to use their voices to influence the system. Last year, he led a voter registration drive at Annie’s House. He helped residents learn about local representatives’ platforms. This way, they could make informed choices. He plans to continue this effort in 2025.

Over the years, Oscar has grown into an outstanding leader. He has taken on more responsibilities, managed staff, and easily met challenges. He was named one of Greenville Business Magazine’s Best and Brightest Under 35 for 2024. This award highlights his impact. Those who worked with him saw his leadership. Marlene Bennett, a Nicholtown resident for 57 years, said, “Oscar is reliable, which means a lot. You can count on him.”

Oscar’s family taught him the value of community service. They instilled in him that serving neighbors is a vital duty. He embodies this truth through his work in Nicholtown. As we wish him well in his future, we echo Shirley Cummings, another Nicholtown resident: “He’s a fine young man. I always enjoy talking with him. He’ll do well wherever he goes.”
